When you’re told the diagnosis, you may feel numb, confused, or unable to remember or process information about your child’s diagnosis or treatment. We understand this and are with you every step of the way. Our staff are always happy to go over information as many times as you may need, so please ask.
The process of making a diagnosis to starting treatment is often referred to as the diagnostic pathway. The specific pathway may vary depending on the type and stage of cancer, as well as your child's individual needs and circumstances.
Once your child is referred, they will undergo various tests and procedures to confirm the diagnosis of cancer. This may include blood tests, imaging scans, and biopsies and these may take place in your local hospital or in Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the multidisciplinary team (MDT) at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children work together to develop a treatment plan for your child. This may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other supportive treatments.
This team oversees the diagnosis and treatment of all cancers in children and adolescents. They work closely with Radiology, Surgical, Neurosurgical, Clinical Oncology, Diagnostic and Laboratory services and colleagues in the South West, to provide comprehensive cancer treatment.
There are regular MDT and multi-professional meetings held at both your local hospital and at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, where various professionals from the team meet to discuss patient management and holistic family-centred care.
At diagnosis, each child will be allocated a lead oncologist/haematologist and a key worker, usually a clinical nurse specialist. There is also an extensive team of health care professionals including play therapists, psychologists, dieticians, physiotherapists, support workers, cancer pharmacists, nurses and nurse specialists that aim to provide specialist and age-appropriate care to children with all cancers.
